Award for basic research in process engineering - Prof. Andreas Seidel-Morgenstern honored with the 2016 Emil Kirschbaum Medal

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Seidel-Morgenstern, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems Magdeburg and head of the Chair for Chemical Process Engineering at the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg, was honored today for his outstanding achievements in the field of process engineering.

As part of the ProcessNet annual meeting in Aachen, he was awarded the Emil Kirschbaum Medal. ProcessNet is the German platform for process engineering, chemical engineering, and chemical technology.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Seidel-Morgenstern, 60, head of the section Physical and Chemical Foundations of Process Engineering at the Max Planck Institute Magdeburg, conducts research on the separation of complex molecules made up of mixtures by crystallization and chromatography. In the production of pharmaceutical agents, for example, numerous enantiomers (molecules which are constructed as mirror images of one another) must be obtained in pure form. His current research projects aim at, among other things, the purification of natural substances such as artemisinin, currently the most effective malaria drug.

"His innovative approaches for the characterization of phase equilibria and transport processes have sustainably influenced process engineering", ProcessNet and DECHEMA e.V.'s justification states. At the opening of ProcessNet's annual meeting on 13 September 2016 in Aachen, Andreas Seidel-Morgenstern was honored for his achievements in the field of process engineering. ProcessNet is a joint initiative of DECHEMA e.V. (Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology) and VDI-GVC (VDI Society Process Engineering and Chemical Engineering). The medal has been awarded every three years since 1991.
