24 outstanding Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg graduates were awarded the State Graduate Stipend this year in support of their further scientific work. The university’s Prorector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Franziska Scheffler, presented the stipend certificates to the young scientists. Funding provided by the state will financially support them through their PhD programs at the faculties for Mechanical Engineering (5), Humanities (4), Mathematics (3), Computer Sciences (3), as well as Process and Systems Engineering, and Business and Natural Sciences (2 each). Nine of the supported junior scientists are international graduates. They are from the Ukraine, China, the Russian Federation, India, Belarus, and Palestine.

“We are happy about the large number of stipend recipients – especially with international backgrounds! The State Graduate Stipend gives us the outstanding opportunity to keep highly qualified junior scientists at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and to assist them in receiving their PhD in a quality assured manner,” Prorector Prof. Franziska Scheffler underlines. “Saxony-Anhalt is one of the few states that enable excellent applicants to receive a scientific PhD in an individually chosen topic independent of structured PhD programs.”

The University of Magdeburg currently has over 900 PhD students enrolled. 46 of them are being funded by the state of Saxony-Anhalt.The goal of the state’s initiative, which has been in existence since 1992, is to motivate outstanding graduates, who desire to complete their PhD at a university in the state, to continue their career in Saxony-Anhalt. The stipend recipients will be chosen by the individual universties themselves. The funding period is for three years according to the newly approved version of 4 February. They receive a monthly stipend of 1,100 Euro.
