The occasion was the first anniversary of the German-Russian Institute of Advanced Technologies GRIAT, jointly run by the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg and the Technical University of Ilmenau and funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Republic of Tatarstan.

The goal of this institute, opened in September 2014 at the Kazan State Technical Research University  KNRTU-Kai, is to establish engineering degree programs according to German standards.

KNTRU-KAI–known also as the "Tupolev University", named after the Russian aircraft manufacturer Andrei Nikolayevich Tupolev - is one of the most prestigious research universities throughout Russia and is considered an elite university. At its affiliated GRIAT ,the first four exported master’s degree programs began with the 2014/15 academic year, among others Chemical and Energy Engineering. In a few weeks the first Russian students will come to Magdeburg to study electrical engineering and process engineering.

In the future, engineering know-how made in Magdeburg through GRIAT will contribute to training Russian engineers.
