Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ernst Dieter Gilles’ 80th Birthday: Congratulations from the Faculty!

11.05.2015 -

The Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering, established in 1998 via the separation of three Institutes formerly of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and one from the natural sciences, would not exist without the local Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems. The founding director of this first Max Planck Institute focused on engineering sciences, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ernst Dieter Gilles, now celebrates his 80th birthday on 16 May 2016.

In 1997, Prof. Gilles took over the Magdeburger MPI leadership as founding director. In 1999, in recognition of his scientific contributions surrounding the development of cooperative relations between the Max Planck Institute and the University of Magdeburg, he was appointed an honorary professorship in “Dynamics of Complex Systems” FVST. He was (co-)initiator of multiple forward-looking interdisciplinary study programmes, such as “Biosystems Engineering” and “Systems Engineering and engineering Cybernetics”, and lead the systems biology section at the Max Planck Institute until 2011.

With his groundbreaking work on various aspects of cellular metabolism and cellular regulation, as well as the consistent integration of biologists and modelers in his group, Prof. Gilles constitutes as one of the pioneers of systems biology.

On the occasion of his 80th birthday, the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems Magdeburg and the Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering honour the merits of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ernst Dieter Gilles as founding director. A detailed account of his career and his achievements can be found at https://www.mpi-magdeburg.mpg.de/2935903/2015-05-06_Gilles_80_Geburtstag.
