Studiengang M.Sc. Chemical and Energy Engineering

Why did you decide to study in Magdeburg?

One of the main reasons was that OVGU offers several master’s programs completely in English, including the Chemical and Energy Engineering program. A second reason was that the cost of living in Magdeburg is affordable compared to other German cities. Moreover, OVGU is known for having a multicultural community with students from all over the world, making it easier for newcomers to blend in.

What have your studies and the city to offer you?

The Chemical and Energy Engineering program offered us a variety of industry-related courses and a company internship, preparing us for a successful job hunt after the end of our studies.
The city of Magdeburg has a very rich history, with some beautiful attractions worth seeing. There are also lots of green areas for taking long walks, cycling, or playing sports. The night is also full of life in some parts of Magdeburg, with a variety of restaurants with cuisine from different countries.

Can you apply what you learned in your studies to your everyday/private life?

I think my studies at OVGU and the multicultural exchange that I had with my classmates have improved my ability to use critical thinking to solve everyday problems with a more structured approach.

Do your studies help you to define your goals for the future?

In my opinion, the main purpose of pursuing a master’s degree is to undergo personal development and acquire knowledge, which can help you easily define your goals for the future and decide what you want to do with your life. In that regard, I believe my studies at OVGU have helped me become more aware of my skills and potential, so now I can easily decide which job or research field would be a good fit for my set of skills.

Has your vision for the future evolved during your studies?

Yes, I think the close supervision that I received during my work on my master’s thesis and getting in touch with senior PhD candidates played a huge role in deciding what I want to do career-wise after completing my studies.

Which advice would you have for starting students or for pupils who want to know more about studying in Magdeburg?

I think they shouldn’t only focus on their university studies, but they should also try to get involved in some extracurricular activities. It’s also important for incoming students to learn the German language because this can help them communicate easily with everyone in the city, and it’s also a great way of getting to know more about the German culture and making new friends. That can also maximize their chances of landing a job after completing their studies.

What do you want to do after your studies?

I am currently looking for a suitable PhD position to continue working on the synthesis and characterization of luminescent particles to probe their optical properties, which can be useful for producing materials with desired physical properties for certain industrial applications.

Do you engage yourself with other projects outside the university?

Not exactly, but you can easily find a free-time activity to do in Magdeburg. For example, if you are a football fan, there is a stadium in Magdeburg where you can go on weekends with your friends and watch exciting matches.

Why should someone decide to come to the University of Magdeburg, to the faculty of Process and Systems engineering?

OVGU is a great place to pursue your studies due to the diversity of its students’ community. The faculty of Process and Systems Engineering has brilliant researchers who cannot only impart knowledge but also offer great guidance and support to their students to help them personally grow. A degree from OVGU is internationally recognized, which can make it easier for university graduates to apply for a job in any other country.
