Congratulations to Dr.-Ing Kharaghani for receiving the "Young Scientist in Drying Award" in China

28.11.2012 -

Dr.-Ing. Abdolreza Kharaghani, lecturer and group leader of the Pore Network Modeling in Process Engineering at the Chair of Thermal Process Engineering, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, was recognized for outstanding contributions to the research in drying field.

On November 14th, 2012, Dr. Kharaghani was awarded the prize "Young Scientist in Drying" - which recognizes early achievements of researchers in drying under the age of 35 - at the 18th International Drying Symposium (IDS) in Xiamen, China. The event took place with participants from over 30 countries, and the prize committee was composed of internationally well-known experts in the field of drying.

Dr. Kharaghani uses advanced numerical models as well as experimental techniques to investigate structural damage and deformation of porous materials during drying process. Currently the research group focuses on the validation and assessment of pore network models by X-ray microtomography and physical pore networks with etched microchannels. In pore network modeling, the porous medium is represented by a network of geometrically similar pores, and transport phenomena are modeled directly at the pore scale. The research in the field of pore network drying models is one of the core research activities at the Chair of Thermal Process Engineering and is prominent internationally. Dr. Kharaghani also works on a research project, which is a part of the DFG Priority Program 1273 “Colloid Process Engineering”. The aim of this project is to develop and validate a 3D micro-scale simulation tool for convective drying of deformable porous media.

The findings from this research can be used in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries, for example, to obtain the product quality during the drying process or to design new products.
