Graduating with a Doctorate later in Life

28.06.2016 -

Dr.-Ing. Friedherz Hartmut Becker successfully defended his dissertation titled “Combustion technology for dishes with special consideration of glost-fired porcelain flatware in fast firing furnaces” on 01 June 2016. At 69 years of age, he is thus far the oldest doctoral candidate at the Faculty for Process and Systems Engineering! In his dissertation, Dr. Becker gives an overview of the various combustion processes and furnace types in the ceramic industry. He shows how furnace processes can be optimized in industrial plants in terms of environmental and economic aspects by means of numerical simulations and operational measurements. The dissertation was at the Institute of Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics under the supervision of Prof. E. Specht. Dr. Becker can look back at 40 years of work experience in one of the leading industrial furnace companies worldwide, at which he, among other positions, acted as authorized officer and head of the Application Center. In addition, he spent several years as chairman of the committee of experts on thermal engineering, part of the German Ceramic Society (DKG) and the Research Community for Industrial Furnace Construction (FOGI). With his dissertation, part of this wealth of experience is retained for young chemical engineers!
