Prof. Krewer studied Chemical Engineering at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg and received her doctorate at the Max Planck Institute in Magdeburg. I chose Chemical Engineering because I wanted to make a difference. I wanted to do something for the environment by developing environmentally friendly processes. Today I am concerned with electrochemical energy conversion, i.e. battery technology and fuel cells.
Motivation
What I enjoy most about my work is discussing research results with my colleagues. Whenever we discover something new, my heart beat quickens and I am then able to develop new research ideas, which I also enjoy.
Requirements
Having a passion for science and wanting to make a difference are both very important. Then you can draw energy from your enthusiasm. Others notice when there is the will to lead and more responsibility is given to you accordingly. You can decide for yourself how much responsibility you want to take on.
Advice
Creativity and thinking “out of the box” help. Find your passion and don't let yourself be carried away. Get feedback or support from superiors, external mentors or peers.
Challenges
I did not solve the challenges I faced alone. Getting help and asking questions are an essential part of a career. Building your own profile is one of the biggest challenges in any career; to do this, you have to develop a vision and goals for yourself and know what (formal) requirements the position has.
