AIR LIQUIDE Research and Development GmbH

Innovation Campus Frankfurt

My interest in Chemical Engineering was sparked by my high school Mathematics and Chemistry courses. I liked seeing the molecular movements and doing Maths equations. Today I mainly work with various computing tools, deal with the operations on site and exchange ideas with colleagues and customers.

Motivation

My main focus is on mathematical modeling on the computer. In my opinion, this is very beneficial because it gives me the opportunity to extent and expand the tools and methods for various technologies. During my career, I was able to work with a wide variety of technologies, such as syngas conversion and the treatment of biological waste water. In my job today, I am primarily concerned with the production of methanol and electrolysis. I like generating new ideas and working on innovative technology that can be used in real processes. It's also nice to be able to work with people with very different approaches and perspectives.

Requirements

In my job it is important to have a passion for interdisciplinary research. Chemical engineering isn't just chemistry, it's a wonderful and complex mix of maths, physics, and other disciplines. In addition to technical know-how, the right work ethic, an open approach and the ability to think critically are essential. Innovators not only have an idea and can think innovatively, but find the product to help society at the right time.

Advice

In the era of Industry 4.0, it can be enormously helpful to be familiar with computer programs in order to stand out from your colleagues. When you come to a country as a foreigner, it is essential to learn the language and learn to deal with failures. It is also good to think about management positions early on in your research career. In order to be able to work in these positions, you need a high level of specialist knowledge, but above all leadership qualities. Building them up can help women acquire and maintain these positions. Another way of advancing women is strong support for (expectant) mothers. In addition, a supportive partner and a focus on your own dream are essential in order to have a career with children.

Challenges

My main challenge is to find a balance between my family and work life. Scientific work requires a great deal of time and concentration, which can then be lacking in your family life. I always try to think positively and to share the household chores and the child care with my partner. It is important to me to specifically plan time to spend with my children when I am at home. Another challenge that many young mothers face is to find a good entry-level position after graduation. It is important to present yourself confidently and to know your own strengths. Care should also be taken to constantly updating one’s profile and to be aware of your important skills.
